Hearing is a complex process of perceiving sound and attaching meaning to it. Fully developed at birth, the human ear responds to sounds that range in loudness from very faint to very loud. Even infants in utero respond to sound.The ability to hear is critically important for normal communication to occur. Audiology is the study of hearing, hearing disorders and habilitation / rehabilitation for persons with hearing loss. Audiologists are health care professionals who identify, assess and manage disorders of the auditory and balance systems.

The primary functions of audiologists include:

  • Testing for disorders of hearing and balance
  • Providing aural rehabilitation to children and adults
  • Selecting, fitting and dispensing amplification systems
  • Preventing hearing loss through the provision & fitting of hearing protective devices
  • Providing education on the effects of noise on hearing
